Late report, my younger son called me up friday night, let's go fishing saturday, so I look at the forcast and said, they are calling for 2 to 3 feet in the morning and 1 foot or less in the afternoon, I was reluctant but he said come on let's go, against my better judgement we went, the plan was to troll for bass using my new setups dragging mojo rigs with trailer rig on top.
We set out at 8am and the wind was blowing 12 to 15 easily, got out of the harbor and dropped the lines in, didn't seem to bad till we made the turn towards New Haven, why can't the weather man just say 1 to 5 instead of 2 to 3 ?, trolling at 3.5 mph we were bucking 3 footers and an occasional 4+ for good measure, as the wind was coming out of the east, we were fighting a head sea that had caused the boat to drop to 1 mph allowing the mojos to bump bottom, anyways, we got almost to the west wall when the port rod went off, before I could grab it, it stopped, missed? reeled the line in and my top mojo was bitten in half, so I told my son, forget this, lets go to middleground and hope that it lays down, so off we go, it was a little narly heading out to middle ground, when we arrived it was still kicking pretty good, I put the mojos back out and we trolled for another hour, 2 more bite offs and I put the trolling gear away, we decided to drift for bottom fish using squid, around noontime it started to lay down, as it did more and more boats showed up, some were trolling others were drifting, 3 of the PJ PBs were out there.
We started catching porgies and c bass, the porgies were hugh, up to 17" and c bass up to 20" , I have never seen porgies that big, I've caught a few that were 17" but not as fat as these were, when we ran out of squid, I tied on an epoxy jig in green and started catching nice c bass and an occasional porgie , my son was using a pink spro with gulp and was equally successful.
We called it quits around 5:30pm and headed back to the barn, my son was at the helm and i sat back to reflect on the days fishing, about 30 minutes into the ride back my son cuts the motor and think, now what, he starts yelling pop, check out the bunker all around the boat, I get off my chair and we were in the biggest school of bunker I've have seen in quite some time, they were everywhere, but nothing was pushing them, we sat there for 30 minutes as the sun was starting to set hoping for something to break but it never did, so off we went and got back around 6:30 as the sun setting . all in all I had a good time, in spite of the conditions, I got to spend some quality time with my son, both of us being busy with work and all, this was the first time in a month that we got out, so all is good. attached are some pics, oh and to have a good laugh, my son caught a rockfish, and I laughed when I saw it. tight lines, hopefully this nor'easter that's coming won't screw up the fishing anymore than it is.
Tight Lines,
Jay
