Took advantage of yesterday’s great weather to run a crew trip for my west end buddies, Pete and Russ. Wind speed and direction dictated a return to the Fishers I. drops that were very good to my charter group this past Saturday.
Started in the shallow 40’ drop with a bit slower action than we experienced on the previous trip. Lots of light bites and a chance to play with the jigging tackle but for almost 90 minutes effort we only boxed 3 keepers to about 3.5#. Just as I started the motor to move off to some deeper drops Russ gets a huge thump and is hard and fast to a serious Tog taking drag at a furious pace. As the battle nears its end I reach over the side, place the small gaff into the fish and as I attempt to lift him over the side he gives a hearty flip and is off the gaff digging for the bottom again! Thankfully, Russ’ jig was securely situated and the Captain made no mistake on the second try. High fives all around as the second DD of my season hit the deck, a fat 10.9# beauty. We gave the spot another 15 minutes, just to be safe, but the bite here was tapering off with the tide.
So, it was time to hit one of my favored deep drops in 70’ of water. Nearly as soon as the anchor came tight the bites commenced and continued at a fast pace for the next 2 hours. We easily filled our boat limit with fish to 5# on this drop and threw back many more keepers. Only three keeper Sea Bass to 2.5# found our hooks today but the excellent Tog bite more than made up for that. Headed back to the dock early for the second trip in a row.
I am chartered this coming Friday and Sunday but still have some open dates later in the month. If you love Tog give me a call and don’t miss out on what has been a superb season so far.
