Took my son with me to visit the Housatonic and hopefully land a bass or two. I had high expectations and based on the number of people there, so did a lot of other people. The last time I took my then 14-year-old across the Sound to try for river stripers there were torrential rains and the only one who caught anything - and I'm pretty sure it was only one fish - was me. He was a real trooper, never complaining and even telling me how grateful he was just to get out that cold, rainy and very long day. Every dad wants to put his kid into fish, so I really felt like I owed him, even if that's not how he sees it. He's 15, but he knows the difference between fishing and catching.
So I was glad to see him hooked up shortly after we got there. We aimed for the top of the tide and used small (4 inch) silver & white pan-tailed soft plastics on small umbrellas. Nobody lit the world on fire, but we caught fish, six in total, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Had a great lunch at the Hook, Line and Sinker afterward and jumped on the 6pm ferry home. Good times.
