Herring in February?

My 10 year old grandson really got hooked on fishing in 2019. He's read in my magazine's about the option of pier fishing for herring (its something I've never done). One of the highly mentioned spots often spoken about is Magnolia pier (Pt. Lookout). Might anyone know if herring are still around in February? I'm thinking of getting him out before winter really shows itself, but hopefully not just to practice his casting.

I can’t answer the question, but I hope so; memories he won’t forget If even just casting with GranPa. (y)

I hear ya, I can't explain the joy I get watching his excitement and enthusiasm while fishing. I relish removing his fish and rebaiting his hooks. I never feel I'm missing out on my own fishing time. That being said, lol, this season I plan to focus on those two very important skills. I think its important to teach him how to handle the different fish we catch here in the northeast. I often use a hookout but knowing about the location of spines, teeth, and other areas of concern should only build his confidence. Soooo looking forward to this Spring and the start of the 2020 season!

Herring fishing is usually very slow this time of year.

I'm beginning to think that I'm a month or so to late.

Yes, started catching them end of November and all of December. Did excellent on the north shore. Concentrating on my clamming right now with the warm temps. Vacuum sealer is hard at work.

I haven't had a chance to get out recently, but if you can swing past Magnolia or any of the other productive piers (Bar Beach, Canarsie Pier, Jones field 10), you can see signs of successful fishing (scales) all over the place if the bite is on unless after a heavy rain. I think they come and go right thru the winter, so keep checking. Good luck.
