I'm headed to Nantucket Shoals next week and I want go fully prepared. I haven't bought myself any new tackle recently so I'm well overdue.

Any suggestions?

The next full moon is August 9th so going next week you will be off the moon which is a good thing for fishing at the shoals. Just about any outfit you use for ocean Fluke fishing on Long Island will be suitable there. Bring along a good assortment of weight up to about 16oz. Poison Tails, Spro jigs, and teasers, are usually productive. Also….important….. Gulp, 6” grubs, assorted colors. I find the Pink Shine to usually be the most productive.

Good luck!!

x2 on Poison Tails and 6" Gulp grubs. Most of the time for me it was chicken rigs with up to 24 oz of lead. Jig when possible. Lots of nice sea bass as a bycatch. It's a long journey, but so worth it. I changed my drive from Throgs Neck Bridge and N on 95 to taking the Orient Point ferry. You don't really save any time, but it is much more enjoyable to me overall.Nantucket Shoals PB.webp

The Palmarius slow pitch 5, Daiwa Saltiga, pretty sure the 15. Good up to 8 oz. You would still need something heavier.

You are usually not fishing on sticky bottom, so there's less concern with losing an expensive rig.

I have a never used Graviate 2 GRAVITATE 2.0 - Temple Reef The 400kg model. I have never used it and I'm thinking it might be fun to bring along. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about them?

Do not have experience with this one, but looked interesting if a 7'2" rod needed.

While guys like to travel up there in the hopes of catching a career fluke, the reality is its not for everyone and disappointing for many. Keepers with a sprinkling of 5-7lb fish. Maybe a jumbo or 2 if your fortunate.

We used to see 12-16lb fish with regularity back in 90s. Having the right conditions is so crucial up there.

Best of luck!

Heavy sinkers needed up to 28 oz. And leader material to handle it (50 lb+). If you use droppers make sure loop goes above eyelet of minimum 8/0 long shank hook and not in that notch by shank. I still have nightmares about how I lost Flukzilla....

So I ended up twisting my knee a few days before, and I'm finally starting to recover. I'll be 70 in a few days - I hope this isn't a sign of things to come 🙂. The guys went only to discover that the Helen H folk's screwed up and had no captain to run the boat. They jumped on an open boat and limited with fish to 4-pounds.

Feel better George. At least the guys were able to jump on an open boat and the trip was not a complete waste.
