Sailors' superstitions

Superstitions go hand and hand with fishing. As a very pragmatic guy, I have to admit there are some things I bend my logical outlook for. Seagulls are on that list. I had a deckhand that was chasing a seagull around the deck ..... it couldn't fly because the room between the bench and the rail wasn't enough to spread its wings. I remember giving him a lecture afterwards that if you work on the water, you respect life, especially seagulls.

"A *seagull* at sea carries a sailor's soul, and the screech of the bird is the mournful cry of the dead man. Do not touch the gull to avoid injury to the deceased. "

I found out a few weeks later that on the way home that night my deckhand wrecked his car .

I read this tonite and it reminded me of that ......

I always enjoy the people who are unwittingly chowing down on a banana while half the boat gives them the stink eye. I then have to point them to the printout we have posted in the cabin. Afterwards they usually throw it out.

I had that the other day, I said to the mate I guess he doesn't know not to eat bananas on a boat as I point to him with the peel sitting next to him. Mate goes we even have a sign in the galley!

I'm sure you've heard me say this before, but it's bad luck to be superstitious.

And it's a poor excuse to blame your lack of fishing skills on a piece of fruit.

He'll let you know when you can go on and can't go on. ;)

2 bananas and a gatorade. Now I chunk anywhere from 6 t0 8 hours on the surf.

This was the days in witches and warlocks.
When they would stone people for justice.

Bananas were a source of bad luck for ships carrying other types of fruits as well.
Bananas give off ethylene gas, which can cause other fruits to ripen and, thus, spoil
more quickly than they would otherwise. This unintended result might be a source
of concern for ships looking to turn a profit on fresh fruits. It attracted rats.

**Plague is a disease that affects humans and other mammals. It is caused by the
bacterium, Yersinia pestis. Humans usually get plague after being bitten by a rodent
flea that is carrying the plague bacterium or by handling an animal infected with plague.**

A banana hold 422 milligrams of potassium

Although potassium is not absorbed through your skin, it can enhance the moisture
and feel of your skin. A potassium compound is used in cosmetics, bath products,
fragrances and suntan products to adjust pH and help moisturize a pH adjuster or
bufferer in a wide variety of formulas, including bath products.

I called him out on the jetty. We had a scuffle. :D

BTW, I thought it was Albatross that carried the souls of lost sailors, not seagulls. Never thought that those flying garbage cans carried the soul of anything but a racoon.
