Had the Chris party of join me today for a spring mixed bag trip under some beautiful weather conditions.

Started the morning on the ebb tide for Bass in the Gut and while the fish were there, the bite today was a bit slower than my last few outings. Still, the guys worked hard and after just a couple of drifts Matt strikes quickly, landing the first and largest keeper of the morning, a super fat and tall 31” Striper. A couple more drifts and then Andy follows with one just undersized. Shortly after that Matt nails another slot fish but then things got really quiet. We soon noticed the appearance of a seal, which, oddly enough, seemed to be surfacing just in front of my boat every time I set up a new drift. So, we headed a bit further into the Sound hoping to avoid the Seals insatiable appetite. Nothing doing on the ebb near Pigeon, so we made our way back to the Gut before heading into the bay.

Thankfully the seal was gone this time, and we managed to deck another 3 Bass, 2 being slot fish to fill out or limit with Joe and Andy finally connecting on the last 2 keepers.

Heading into the bay we decided that with the really poor Fluke bite we would instead concentrate on the Weakfish and maybe some Scup by catch. That was a good move as the last 90 minutes of the trip gave up 4 Weakfish with 3 keepers up to 20” and a few decent sized Scup. Matt had the hot hand again when it came to the Weakfish as he decked 2 of the 3 keepers. Chris finally redeemed himself after a frustrating morning on Bass with the last Keeper Weakfish and the largest Scup of the day.

So, everyone went home with some tasty filets, and we had a lot of laughs on one of those days when it’s just great to be on the water!

Great job Capt Mike, the name of the game in the Gut is being able to adapt to the conditions of the day, & if anyone has that dialed in you do.
