Captain's Table - Porgy Heaven!

My 2025 charter season started off with a huge bang for my loyal Porgy fans, Tony and his buddies who make the long drive from NJ several times each year. Perfect weather and light tides made for a very enjoyable and action-packed trip.

All it took was one drop at a favored spot near Shelter Island to secure a full boat limit of some seriously large Peconic Bay Scup. The guys were focused on the task at hand and with a consistent chum slick going the bite was lights out for the brief 2.5 hours needed to fill everyone’s coolers. Many fish were real jumbos in the 18-19” class with several fat enough to push the scale past the 3# mark! A nice 4# Weakfish taken by Tony himself, was a nice bit of icing on an already super catch.

If extra-large Scup “light your fire” then I strongly suggest booking a trip before we reach the first week of June. Although the quantity of Porgies in our area remains high throughout the season, the very largest fish are always taken in the early part of the season.

I am off for the weekend to take care of some chores at home and celebrate Mother’s Day with the family. However, I will be making a prospecting trip or two for Stripers, Fluke, and Weakfish next week. As the water temperatures steadily climb on the North Fork, I am confident all of our popular species will begin to find their way into the box!
