Dense Fog & Sea Bass

Monday morning weather called for light winds & a dense fog advisory till 9AM, thought I’d take a look. Hitched the boat up to the pickup & took off to the Mattituck DEC launch ramp about 6:30. Water looked flat & a haze over the water, looked like a go. Launched & pointed the bow east towards mid sound, the further off the beach I got the thicker the fog got, had the radar set for 1 & 1/2 miles not a boat in sight. Got to my numbers in about 80’ & it was game on with solid sea bass action. Threw back quite a few last years & this years keepers, keeping three knuckleheads, two fish over 18”. The fog lifted by 10 & never saw more than a couple commercial boats on the radar.4D675AAD-5AD7-4059-B4DB-092DF21622FA.webp

No radar on my boat
I look at radar as a "Defensive Weapon" on the boat. I would never leave my harbor if radar was necessary, but it sure is nice when a typical Maine fog comes roaring in with no warning and I'm miles from home...

Yep.
Thats why I don't leave the dock in fog. If it comes in while I'm out I deal with it and get home, usually....
As most others say, its more about the other guys than me. I'm fairly confident in my own ability to be cautious and navigate accordingly but get freaked out by other clueless nautical nimrods

Nice work, John. Good to know they are out there.

Between some side jobs and an invite on a friend's boat last weekend I have not yet had a chance to try for Sea Bass myself. I will definitely rectify that this weekend!

Looks like my Son will come out & we will fish sea bass on Saturday, I think I'm gonna stay to the west & fish out of mattituck.

Based upon your recent results that sounds like a good plan to me. Have a great time with your son!!
