Weakfish and Ocean Bass

Got out early morning Thursday in search of weakfish. Came out of my marina in Bayshore and ran straight to west channel. Gave it about 30mins without a bite so decided to move to ocean beach with the fleet. Arrived to a parking lot of boats all jigging for weakfish. Managed a nice 20" and a few short with some blues mixed in. Used mostly 1/2-3/4 jig head and pink bass assassins. bite started to slow around 830 so decided to move west and check out the fluking by the coast guard station. Gave it a few drifts with no hits so I went outside to see if i could find some bass. Went east a few miles near the pencil and found most of the bunker in 20-30ft. Set up on one pod that looked tight, snagged and put the bunker on the circle hook, and out she went behind the boat while i rigged another. not 5 minutes later i see my bunker being chased on the surface and shortly taken by a 39" bass, resulting in a short but great fight. after getting the hook out (which still ended up in her throat) she was released healthy back to finish her migration. Gave it another hour of so without a bite and the wind and surf started picking up so called it and headed in. Hoping this northeast blow doesnt send the fish past us and they are still around when the ocean calms. Happy Memorial weekend.

I'm increasing reports for weaks (Speckled Trout) being caught down here as well.

That is interesting. Historically they're a very cyclical fish, but we haven't seen this many being caught in a while. I'm on the NY advisory board for weakfish and this is the largest body of fish we have seen in years.

Went out yesterday morning and the fish seemed to have spread out from ocean beach. Was slower than the other day with wind against tide but managed a very nice 24" in west channel. 20210601_092206.webp

@PeterP I fished that area for 5 years and caught many nice weakfish in West Channel. It always seemed to be a sign that the weakies would soon be on the move.

Keep at it and thanks for posting!
