Robert Majors, 41, of Bristol, and Peter Parente, 53, of West Greenwich, who the DEM identified as commercial fishermen in Massachusetts, were arrested on Wednesday as a result of stepped-up patrols off Block Island as part of a multi-agency effort called “Operation Level Playing Field.”

In a joint operation, Connecticut State Environmental Conservation Police and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation patrolled the waters off Block Island to target illegal striped bass fishing. They boarded boats fishing on the Southwest Ledge off the coast of Block Island, an area frequented by charter boats, dive operations and both recreational and commercial anglers.

DEM officers learned at the time that Majors and Parente were believed to be fishing in the area and selling their catch in Massachusetts, which is illegal. Working on a tip, Wednesday, DEM officers approached Parente and Majors at a residence in West Greenwich and found them to be in possession of 38 striped bass with a total weight of 1,054 pounds. None had the right pectoral fin removed. Regulations require the fin to be clipped so the fish can easily be identified as having been caught by recreational fishermen. Dealers are not allowed to sell striped bass with clipped fins.

Horrible !!, to bad they didn't wait till they sold them and get the guy they were going to sell them to. I think it's ok for them to go after the fishermen but if you know they will be selling them or catch them in the act then you can take all party's down. If they also focused on the folks that buy illegal fish it would slowdown a lot of illegal fishermen.

They couldn't the arrest was made by the RI DEM police, it looks like the fish were headed to dealers in MA, so the RI DEM would not have been ale to do anything once they had crossed the state line.

Im pretty sure if the RI Dem's alerted Mass. they could have arrested them knowing where the fish came from. Much like if i kidnapped someone here and crossed the state line those authorities could /would arrest me.

Yeah i know it's a federal thing but you get the idea. 🙂

Wrong, Don, they did nothing illegal in MA. They had MA commercial licenses, which entitled them to keep those fish in MA. Kidnapping across state lines is a federal crime.

I totally agree with you Don. I'm thinking that they are in possession of illegally harvested fish.
