I like a V-Cut on any ring under 50

Full slice please on larger rings since then I can chew and maybe even get to spit some of it, enjoying the tobacco even more.

I don't use a v-cut. I use a guillotine. I smoke around 50 ring size and up. I'm careful to take off only the cap.
V-cut is for smaller ring sizes. They can be tricky to use. That may be why you're shredding your smoke.

If I'm in a bind I'll take my pocket knife and with the tip punch an X in the end.

I find the opposite I get a hotter/more flavor burn from a punch

Smaller area to draw through will make the cigar burn slower and cooler.

Punch cutters are also better to use if you smoke short filler cigars, but I don't think that you do.
