Captain's Table - Solid Bass Bite

Today’s ¾ day Bass/Bay trip found my long-term loyal customer Matt and his wife Jenn join me for some solid spring action. Due to some important family obligations (the birth of their 2 sons) Jenn has been waiting for a couple of years to get her chance at Bass fishing with us on the North Fork. Her long wait was properly rewarded with some very cooperative and hungry Stripers.

In order to take full advantage of the combination of the last 90 minutes of a strong New Moon flood tide occurring near sunrise we made a super early 5 am departure from the dock, The crew’s bucktails hit the water at 5:50 am and by 6 Jenn already had her first 31” slot sized Bass smiling at her on the deck! The action was very steady for the next hour with fish being hooked on nearly every drift. In a little more than 75 minutes time Matt and Jenn put a total of 9 Bass on the deck while also dropping a couple of more fish with less solid connections. We managed to find 3 slots for the boat limit plus a few shorts and overs to fill out the mix. Matt took top honors with a fat 35” fish that tipped the scales at 18#. He also managed to land another over slot fish on a Flutter Spoon as the tide was starting to slow up.

Next stop for the start of the ebb was the Greenport area, but the very slow drift conditions found no life here where I had found some short Fluke earlier in the week. We eventually worked our way back to Southold Bay and managed to get s slow bite started. I had expected a few more Fluke but all we could find was one 18” short. However, as a pleasant surprise, the somewhat elusive Weakfish did find the crews Fluke rigs. During the last hour of the trip, we boated 4 Weakfish with 3 keepers to make for another species limit of the morning. All the while, the temperatures on the water today were quite comfortable while the folks back on land were already suffering from some really high heat. Wound up being a very nice morning to be on the water from many perspectives.

For those who like Bass fishing I still have one spot open for next Friday 6/19 which will be another Bass/Bay mixed bag trip. Just give me a call if you want to hop aboard.

Congrats on a great day. The bass bite was very good yesterday. I was fishing right alongside you for a bit. The bite turned on about an hour before you arrived with some very aggressive bites.
