“We Were Catching Everything” – Suffolk County
On Nov. 25, ECO Dickson received a complaint of a head boat keeping undersized striped bass in the back chest near the boat’s stern. ECO Dickson quickly boarded a patrol vessel to investigate the complaint and found the head boat in question returning from the inlet. The ECO boarded the vessel and immediately observed several striped bass racks (carcasses with the fillets removed) and whole striped bass in baskets in the stern. The biggest fish were only 26 inches in length; the smallest were 22 inches. Twelve fish were found aboard the vessel, all outside of the legal slot size of 28 to 31 inches. The ECO interviewed the captain and crew of the boat and when asked if they measured any of the fish, a mate on the boat said, “We were catching everything.” ECO Dickson contacted ECO Perkins for assistance in inspecting the at-capacity vessel. As the head boat made its way into home port, more fillets were found in the below deck freezer. The captain of the vessel was issued citations for undersized striped bass and possessing more than the legal limit of striped bass. The seized fish were donated to a local wildlife rehabilitator.

How can you possibly justify allowing that boat to keep its license?

Better yet, why won't the state look into legislating to allow seizure and auction ?

Why not post the name of the boat?

everyone is so afraid of being sued for slander. there is a boat out of Huntington (with double initials) that has earned much hatred as well. since I have never been on a party boat let alone that boat, I won't post it either, hearsay or not.

Why not post the name of the boat?

Regarding the name, it hasn't been disclosed. There are rumors, but nothing concrete. I shared this on several charter forums, but my posts were removed. Since this website is a free platform and I don't host any ads, I have the liberty to express my views openly. Over the years, I've become familiar with numerous charter and party boat operators from Westchester to Montauk.

I've developed immense respect for most of them, a sentiment I still hold. They embody the best qualities of our nation. However, the individual you mentioned is a notable exception, a disgrace to the party boat community. This person, whom I refuse to support through my platform, even after multiple offers for paid promotions, once made a reprehensible comment about a personal tragedy in my family. Despite this, it's perplexing how he maintains a high regard among peers. His lifelong career in maritime activities doesn't change my opinion of him.

In the future, I might need to incorporate automated advertisements on the site, but I'll ensure that I won't have to compromise my principles for any advertiser.

It was very easy to figure out. There’s a picture, just match it up. The location is in the title. Don’t patronize if it bothers you.

Am I the only one that's wondering why those good looking fillets were donated to a local wildlife rehabilitator? Was he hungry?

I assumed 'wildlife rehabilitator " was code for migrants.

Wildlife Rehabilitator is EXACTLY what is means, not an example of your sarcastic vitriol, which has nothing to do with a great DEC action, something we need more of.

A good example would be a bird rehabilitation center where fish would be fed to gulls, loons, osprey, owls, eagles, etc., or marine rehabilitation center where the seals, turtles, etc. would enjoy a nice bass dinner. A nice bonus here is that the racks can be donated there too.

Please..........it was a simple joke. Lighten up!

While I agree this was a great DEC action, the fact remains that while this boat was caught it's likely they did it before. The crew sounds about as sharp as a marble.......

How many other boats are skirting the rules with this assinine slot?

Sorry Domonick I could see giving them the wracks but those fillets could have fed a few hungry families. And we have plenty of those here now.

IIRC George, NY DEC has some public health issues with giving confiscated fish, and possibly game, out for human consumption. I may be mixing things up with another state...

Why were there fillets in a freezer in the hold. Were they being sold?
The weren't fresh fish that was just caught. They were frozen for some reason
If so, go after the buyer as well.
