Good news, the lake has been cleaned of invasive vegetation and deepened. I can’t believe it took so many years to get this done. I wonder what the plans are for restocking the fish population.2439AA9A-0F17-48B2-B886-BB7A17570FB6.webpE0856CB6-A578-4A76-9B70-D88B0203D832.webp

from DEC list: Is there somewhat safe parking on Ohls Street (north end) ? Any parking on Traction Blvd ?
Years ago I fished Patchogue Lake, access just south of a SCPD precinct. Never tried Canaan.

I fished the south side of the street in the small pond and did very well. I don’t think you can access the main lake as it’s all private homes. Only can fish along road over the fence.?

Ohls Street years ago, yes. Drive right up and fish. And if you wanted, drive up right into the woods. Some good party life up there!! 🙂 Blueberries if you knew where to look. Thus that road closed at the last two houses!! I grew up very close to the lake. Awesome fishing for trout, pickerel and bass. We livelined everything for those picks and bass!! But that was 35 years ago!!

Fishing became better for the "fence bound" once the vegetation overtook the lake. Right up to draining, grey light and darkness was a good time to tangle big fish. With a pool cue rod and 65# braid! 🙂
Oh, and no crowds.

That spot you can pop a boat in there. Has become overgrown and as I slowed up use of my puddle boat, I did not take the initiative and let's just say, make a bigger ramp! 🙂

We fished on the south side from a rubber raft. The spillway would push water south and it would hit the south bank and move east until it got to the next spill area. Remember you actually had some deep water back in there before vegetation and years of sediment clogged it. Late afternoon late in the hottest of summer we did very well back there as the sun went behind the trees to the west. Follow the shadow line where the deep water met turns, weed lines, or shoreline. They were happy to eat for us!

Seemed like a good place to drop an article about Lake Trout rather then start a new thread.

Will be deeper. Will probably spend some time in the boat mapping it out. Very cool to see all the stumps that were hiding under the silt. And old dock pilings on the west side of the big portion.

Caught a bunch of Lunkers up on Lake Ontario about 20 years ago. Gives ya a hell of fight & not bad eating. Most seemed to be in the 10 to 20+ pound range as I recall. 1st & only time I've ever fished with downriggers.

Beautiful Lake BTW.

Hope they restock Canaan with trout, but i do not think its very likely. Once they take bodies of water off of the stocking list they usually dont go back on. They removed lower yaphank lake from the list years ago because it got choked out, drained the lake a couple years ago, and removed many metric tons of spoil and vegetation. Still no plans to start stocking. same with Edwards ave/ Peconic river. it dried up, they stopped stocking.. New dam with a fish ladder, full of water but not put back on the stocking list. Here's to hoping Canaan is different, I have many good memories fishing there with the old man as kid.
