Governor in NY was set to make an announcement regarding a new artificial reef in NY waters at 10AM & I forgot to listen. Anyone have information, location about this. John

Did they say when??

I wish they would create an offshore site a few miles southeast of Cholera. There is a nice area between the shipping lanes that is just open bottom. Great for Fire Island and Freeport party and rec boats. Doable from Deb's as well.

They dumped some old railroad cars. Ironic, in that, we sent all of those subway vars to NJ years ago for their reefs.

The Governor said:

"We're going to do a very cool thing, which is dropping rail cars into the reef, what's called Hempstead Reef, but it's off Point Lookout, off Jones Beach - three miles out from Point Lookout and Jones Beach," the governor said. "It will help the shoreline, it will help tourism, it will help the quality of life, fishing is a big deal. You know that I like to fish, diving is a big deal, all the people who come to Long Island to enjoy that. So, it's very cool."

About damn time. How many of those train cars did the NY tax payers pay to have cleaned and then shipped to NJ for the same purpose. Hopefully there will be many more reefs coming to NY.

Yes, and it's SO sticky no dragger, even with rock hoppers, will try to drag it, whether or not it's legal to do.

It's funny you mention this as from what I can see some of it will allow potters. I'll be checking it out and reporting back.

DUH, potting was "new" when I left LI so I never think in those terms. Prime lobstah real estate too!

From the guy on the rail.

It's swing that's my concern. Positioning under wind and current.
Not everyone has the option a head boat fisherman does. Like
double anchoring and having the ability to fish the bow while
double anchored. This can lead to one of two things if a head
boat sits on it. It can be someone's lead business or we cleaned
out what I see being a small piece for a head boat.

I think I worded it properly. It should make sense. 🙂

I work for the tugboat companies that did the dumping. The railroad cars were 12 foot high by 55 foot long. It will really depend on how the site on the bottom. The sides were removed so it’s all exposed steel beam in the shape of a rectangular box.Theres also about a 30 by 15 foot turbine blade. Its going to be nasty stuff to fish for sure

Now that's not fake news! I'm going to do some counting on the Smithtown Reef when the weather allows.

I can confirm that this area they dumped the items in was just inside the SE corner of the marked reef area on your charts. They where dumping during the last weeks of September and the barge was still parked there at the end of the month. Should start to be productive in the spring at the latest...maybe sooner
